While today’s city of Port Elizabeth was founded by British settlers,
the original lagoon and its river were used by Khoisan hunter-gatherers
and Portuguese, Dutch and British sailors for fresh water. The bay has
beautiful, endless beaches, and is home to many marine animals -
including whales and dolphins, which can sometimes be spotted from the
beach or on boat trips. Because of the Agulhas current flowing down the
east and south coasts, the water is warm, providing good swimming,
surfing and diving conditions.
