The British International College

We offer superb individual tuition towards internationally recognised Cambridge qualifications. Through the Cambridge Local Examination syndicate we offer students a complete qualification in 'A' Level, HIGCSE, 'O' Level (IGCSE) and Foundation learning in order to obtain a school leaving certificate that is recognised by prestigious Universities throughout the world.

Exclusive

The British International College aims to provide students of above average academic ability with a learning environment in which their potential can be realised.

International

Working through the Cambridge International Examination syllabuses at the College where they are taught in small classes by highly qualified and experienced lecturers, students have the opportunity to secure their futures by developing the skills and knowledge that students of similar age are developing all over the world.

Informal

Studying in a safe, informal college environment, students mature and become highly motivated. The social and communication skills so essential to success in any career today are given full opportunity to develop. Accelerated learning techniques and study skills are taught to enhance academic abilities.

Flexible

The Cambridge system is highly flexible, allowing a unique curriculum to be designed for each individual student. The examinations held in June and November each year, are set and marked at the Cambridge University International Examinations Syndicate in the United Kingdom and the qualifications are conferred by this prestigious educational institution.

Challenging

The Cambridge philosophy of education aims not only to provide students with knowledge and skills but encourages them to apply these to the real world in a critical and independent way. The courses are demanding and challenging and thoroughly prepare students for University study and the demands of modern life.

Development

The personal development programme is designed to develop our students potential to their fullest.  This programme engages them in physical and creative activities as well as speed-reading, philosophy and community service. Students are able to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh/President's Award, a highly desirable asset for an applicant to University. Students are offered the opportunity to gain real world work experience in order to help them plan their future. Guidance for tertiary studies and careers is offered. Cambridge IT Skills and Thinking Skills certification is available.

Professional

British International College has been fortunate to retain the services of Mrs. Margaret Oshry (B.A; UED; B. Ed; M. Ed). This well-known educationist, previously head of teaching practice at the Johannesburg College of Education, has several years of experience in the establishment and management of Cambridge courses. Johan Mitton the Director of Studies is widely recognised as an expert in Mathematics and Science education.

Courses:
Normally after a two year course, Foundation students write Cambridge Checkpoint examinations in English, Mathematics, Science and BIC examinations in all other subjects. IGCSE students normally write Cambridge examinations in all subjects except in Foreign Languages after two years of study. Because students resident in South Africa do not hear, speak or read these languages in their daily lives, these courses normally continue for another 6 months, with the Cambridge examinations being written in June of the first year of the A-level programme. Computer Studies may be written for a Cambridge skills certificate at the end of the first year of study.
A-levels is a two year course with the AS papers normally being written halfway through the second year.
Note: Acceleration or delay is possible at any level in any subject. BIC attempts to assist each student to design the curriculum that works best for them. 50% is the minimum we consider satisfactory for proceeding to the next level; a C at IGCSE for entry to A-level.
