Research and Post Graduate Training

Research focus area:
Drug research and Development

Faculty of Health Sciences, North-West University,
Potchefstroom Campus

Most of the members of this focus area are employees of the School of Pharmacy and also registered Pharmacists. They act as tutors for academic interns during their Masters degree studies.
We have 12 NRF-rated members in this focus area.
Sub-programmes
Drug design and mechanisms in neuropsychiatry and neuroprotection
In this sub-programme there are several internationally recognized researchers with expertise in chemical synthesis of organic compounds, chemical-physical characteristics, structure-activity relationship and drug design, metabolism, inborn errors of metabolism, analytical method development, mitochondrial studies etc. The group also focuses on the diseases and therapy of the central nervous system (CNS), specifically anxiety and stress-related disorders, and the involvement of neurodegeneration. The sub-programme aims to develop animal models of neurological and psychiatric illnesses (in vitro and in vivo) with the aim of improving our understanding of the biological basis and pharmacological treatment of a given disorder.
Drug Delivery
Drug delivery has an excellent team working on drug delivery processes across biological membranes in order to enable more efficient bioavailability and delivery of drugs and the development of novel cost effective drug delivery systems. Research on the physico chemical aspect of formulation for industry is also our core business.
Post graduate programmes
All post graduate programmes are managed by the focus area. We offer Masters, Ph.D as well as Post Doctoral training. Students can do an academic internship during their Masters degree studies in the School of Pharmacy.
