St Andrew's School for Girls (Senior)

St Andrew's School for Girls is a top independent Christian school founded in 1902. We have a co-ed preschool, and an all girls' junior and senior school. Boarding facilities are available for girls from grade 8 to 12. We are conveniently situated in Senderwood, Bedfordview, Johannesburg, just 15 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport. We offer bus services from the north, south and east of Johannesburg. Details can be found on our website.

This is a school that blends tradition and innovation to ensure an education that skills girls for life. We believe in helping each girl realise her potential through the creation of opportunity. This comes from cutting-edge facilities and teachers. We have a strong spiritual programme in the school which is based on the values of accountability, integrity and respect. All girls attend chapel services.

Academics

As an independent school, St Andrew's girls write the Independent Examination Board (IEB) examinations and are excellent achievers, all fulfilling their personal potential. In 2012, we achieved a 100% pass rate for the 24th year in succession.

Grade 8 to Grade 9

The General Education and Training (GET) curriculum comprises: languages (English, Afrikaans or Zulu and French); mathematics; natural sciences; humanities; arts and culture; economic and management sciences; life orientation; and information literacy skills. We offer a programme called GETAhead, which provides opportunities for speakers and outings, cross-curricular activities, practical learning and exploration to promote broad and independent thinking. The inclusion of outdoor experience adds value to the design of this curriculum.

Grade 10 to Grade 12

Students in the Further Education and Training (FET) phase follow the National Senior Certificate (NSC) core curriculum. The four compulsory subjects are: two languages (English and Afrikaans or Zulu); mathematics or mathematical literacy; and life orientation. The three choice subjects include: physical sciences; life sciences; French; geography; history; accounting; dramatic arts; visual arts; computer applications technology (CAT); and music.

Boarding

Boarding is offered to girls in Grades 8 - 12, on a weekly or full-time basis. Occasional boarders are also accommodated where possible. Our modern boarding house welcomes girls from South Africa and abroad into a happy, comfortable and friendly environment. Grade 8 - 10 girls share a room; in grade 11, two girls share a room; grade 12s have their own rooms. There are two matrons and two assistant matrons who care for the girls.

We serve balanced, nutritious meals and cater for special dietary requirements.

Over weekends, boarders are taken on outings and the school's excellent sporting facilities and gym are also available for their use. Girls may also attend church services on Sundays. The matrons will transport the girls to and from the airport at mid term breaks and at the end of terms. A medical doctor visits the boarding house on a Wednesday. The Linksfield Clinic is a five minute drive from the school.

Social Responsibility

We are proud of our community service programme, which falls under the Ubambiswano umbrella. We run a Saturday morning school for children from Daveyton, a mobile library that serves the Daveyton Community and a Reading Gogo's literacy programme in Daveyton Schools.

Each child is expected to take part in a variety of internal and external community service activities. Girls are able to participate in the President's Award Challenge, spend time at a charity of their choice and some girls assist at our crèche and aftercare in the afternoons.

We believe that by providing students with a sense of self and community we are equipping them to be socially responsible for life. We also believe in protecting our environment and we have been awarded the international Eco-Schools flag, platinum status.

This term our girlswere involved in the CANSA sprayathon and they packed food parcels for the Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa campaign. We also collected five cent coins towards this campiagn. In the junior school, Milner house raised funds for Letsha Primary School in Daveyton to improve their kitchen facilities.
