Roedean School (SA) Senior School

The challenges facing schools today are significant. When parents select a particular school environment in which their daughter will be educated, they are making one of the most critical decisions with regard to her life. If the school provides optimum capacity to give her a superb education, this will prove to be the single best investment that parents can make.

Roedean’s progressive curriculum remains its point of differentiation in a highly competitive independent- school environment. This 111-year-old all-girls’ school offers exceptionally well-rounded, academic, sporting and culturally relevant curriculum.

21st Century Curriculum & Facilities

In line with Roedean’s exceptional academic record, and with specific focus on Mathematics, the school opened the Rene and Fred England Centre of Mathematic Excellence on November, 2013.  This state-of-the-art facility will provide innovative and creative teaching-and-learning opportunities, internally for Roedean school staff and pupils, and externally to our identified partner schools and teachers from state schools who participate in the programme.

Roedean is also partnered with Wits University; our aim is to share our expertise in Mathematics education by working with, and mentoring, Mathematics departments from previously under-resourced schools. At the same time, the Roedean girls will benefit from the development of curriculum material, the use of technology in teaching and learning, and exposure to both national and international strategies in Mathematics education.

Social Responsibility

Roedean’s progressive cross-curricular approach aims to nurture socially responsible women. Active Social Responsibility programmes are fundamental to the school’s ethos. The Roedean Academy is one of the many programmes that seeks to provide tutoring in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English to students from neighbouring schools. The objective of the Roedean Academy is to help selected students from participating schools to obtain entrance to good universities in order to study engineering, medicine, and other sciences.

Boarding Facilities

The state-of-the-art Mary Williams boarding house was opened in 2011. Roedean has successfully blended modern technology with the original architectural style of Sir Herbert Baker. The design of the boarding house uses the latest eco-architectural systems. For the first time in South Africa, advanced-energy insulation material is being implemented in the construction of a boarding house. Two heating pumps have been installed in the building:

·         One system will provide under-floor heating

·         The other system will provide hot water for domestic use

The new contemporary boarding facility will continue to bring a special spirit to Roedean that that ensures the school is vibrant twenty-four hours a day.  It is secure and provides comfortable single and double rooms for as many as 80 girls. Three healthy meals and tea-time snacks are served daily. The resident Matrons serve as surrogate mothers and provide a structured environment for their charges, while never forgetting the need for the girls to become responsible and independent young ladies. A registered nurse is available twenty-fours hours a day seven days a week, and the school psychologists are always available for emotional guidance. Roedean’s boarding facility is truly ‘home away from home’. Each girl is encouraged to bring her personal touch to her living space.
