St Andrew's School for Girls (Junior)

The junior school is a vibrant and happy place where young girls learn the skills they need for life-long learning and to become global citizens in the 21st century. They are encouraged to experience, explore and engage in all that we do at St Andrew’s. There is a focus on the individual and a place for every child to excel.

We are a Christian school and the girls attend chapel once a week. We have a strong spiritual programme in the school which is based on the values of accountability, integrity and respect.

We have a fully equipped therapy centre with an experienced and highly qualified team of therapists led by our school psychologist. This team is part of the staff body at the school and works alongside teachers and parents to enable each child to overcome barriers to learning.

The junior school exists for children and is a place for each child to belong. The girls are encouraged to do the best they can, to take risks, to grow independent and to be responsible. Taking the development of young girls seriously, St Andrew’s Junior School is a school that will produce the leaders of tomorrow.

Academics

In the curriculum, the methodology of our academic programme is outcomes and skills based, using a variety of problem-solving skills, as well as critical and creative thinking. The girls learn Zulu and Afrikaans up until grade 5 when they choose one of these languages to take to grade 12. There is also an emphasis on technology and the girls are encouraged not only to learn how to use computers but also to acquire the skills they need to find, analyse, summarise and apply the information to which they have access.

Social Responsibility

The girls are encouraged to take part in a wide variety of social development programmes. Each girl belongs to one of four houses which are responsible for raising funds and using them to make a difference in the communities around us.

Being an Eco School (platinum level), there is a great deal covered in the curriculum that addresses environmental issues facing our country and the world. Projects like a butterfly garden, a tree trail, a bird garden and recycling are undertaken every year. We are also rehabilitating barn owls for release into the wild and we have "bat hotels" on the lower level of our property.

Activities

Sports

The sporting facilities at our school are extensive. These include a water-based astroturf, tennis and netball courts, a fully equipped gym, squash courts, swimming pool, diving well and Learn-to-Swim pool. We also offer golf and horse riding (we won the league in which we compete). We field a number of teams in swimming, tennis, hockey and netball and we encourage every child to participate in a variety of sports at interhouse level. We have won the Prestige Junior gala for two years in a row, as well as the APPS Foundation Phase gala.

Cultural

There is also a very strong cultural programme on offer. In addition to weekly class music sessions, this includes individual music lessons, choirs, orchestra and marimbas. The girls can also become involved in clubs like Eco, Science, Brownies, Art and Photography. Speech and Drama, as well as Ballet, are very popular co-curricular activities. St Andrew's won Best School Overall in the National Eisteddfod, Eastern Gauteng Region.

The girls in the junior school are encouraged to take part in at least one sporting activity and one cultural activity a term.
