St Martin's School

As an independent, co-educational boarding school, St Martin's is especially valued by parents who seek for their children an academic environment in which Christian standards are reflected. Students of all faiths and denominations are admitted.


Academics

Learners are prepared for the National Senior Certificate through the Independent Examination Board (IEB). All tertiary institutions in South Africa and many international universities will accept superior results in the IEB examinations for admission into their degree courses. At the end of Grade 9 a student has the opportunity of choosing three subjects from Option B.

Subjects curently offered in Grade 10 to Grade 12:

Option A, Compulsory: English, Afrikaans, Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy, Life Orientation.

Option B, Elective: Accounting, Business Studies, Civil Technology, Computer Application Technology, Dramatic Arts, French, Geography, History, Hospitality Studies, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Music, Physcial Sciences, Portuguese and Visual Arts.

Extra-curricular academic support programmes, more especially in Mathematics and English, are run on a regular basis throughout the school term. Learners can arrange extra lessons with other subjects on an appointment basis. These programmes are not charged for.



Boarding

St Martin's Senior School is the only co-educational independent boarding facility in southern Johannesburg.

- Boarding offers a caring, nurturing environmnet headed by a senior house master/mistress and assisstant staff - including university-going resident interns.

- Boarding is offered on both a full and weekly basis. The Boarding House is open throughout the year except during school holidays and half-term breaks.

- Boys' boarding is accommodated in Rivett-Carnac House with 27 private bedrooms.

- Girls' boarding in accommodated in Crispen House with 13 private and 3 double rooms.

- Each boarding house has newly renovated five-star bathroom facilities and kitchenettes.

- Full meals are provided three times daily in our school dining room by our contracted caterers. Choices are provided and special dietary needs are catered for.

- Snacks are provided at break-time. Coffee, tea, Milo, juice and biscuits are always available in the respective Boarding House kitchenettes.

- Comfortable recreation rooms are provided with flatscreen TVs, DVD machines and DSAT is supplied.

- Supervised prep sessions are compulsory each day. There is a mentoring system in place and this ensures continuity and develops a caring realationship between a student and his/her mentor.

- Computer facilities are available on the school campus to allow learners to complete homework adn research tasks.

- A bus servie to the local shopping centre is availabe every Sunday morning so boarders can do their personal shopping and have some leisure time.

- The weekend boarding experience is completed by a Sunday Evensong/Bible Study Service: our ethos values the environment in which Christian standards are reflected.
