Redhill Preparatory School

Redhill Preparatory School hosts Grade 1 - Grade 7, with children from 6 to 13 years. As with the rest of Redhill School, our aim is for every child to leave our school having felt like he or she counted as an individual, and having had a thoroughly enjoyable yet rigorous school experience.

Our teachers go to great lengths to get to know the pupils and their families, so that the school experience provided is almost 'customized'. Our detailed termly reports speak volumes of our individualized attention, and a great deal of effort goes into documenting how children progress. The reaction of first-time Redhill parents to the level of reporting and consultation that takes place is telling, and many are impressed by the extent to which the school goes to ensure that parents are informed about children’s progress.

At the heart of Redhill are our children, who, when asked, tell us that Redhill is a happy school. Many of our pupils go on to our high school to gain from the complete Redhill experience. For more information visit us on www.redhill.co.za

In the Classroom

Redhill Preparatory School seeks to provide an enlightened and stimulating academic environment in which new ideas are explored and innovative methodologies are used. Teachers are given the freedom to teach creatively within the structure of the formal curriculum, and our classrooms are caring and exciting places where children are encouraged to reach their full potential.

Beyond the Classroom

We believe that all children have special abilities and that the school has a duty to nurture these. For this reason, we strive to offer as diverse a curriculum as possible. In addition to the regular Preparatory School subjects, we offer a wide range of co-curricular activities.

Music at the Prep School

Senior Prep Music

Class Music
Grades 1-6 have two class music lessons per week (Grade7s have one) in the Music Centre. These are taught by Mrs. Eleanor Hamilton and Mr. Adam. A general syllabus is followed, giving children a strong foundation in the wide-ranging world of music. We have excellent facilities and teaching resources at Redhill for class music and strive to nurture every child’s musical ability.

Grade 4 Xylophone programme
One of the Grade 4 lessons is dedicated to practical work on the xylophones. Children learn the co-ordination required to play the instruments and develop the aural skills to learn the repertoire. Playing in a group, elements of music, performance discipline and auditory awareness is emphasized during the sessions.

Grade 5 Instrument programme
The Grade 5 classes are each split into 4 small groups and children have the opportunity of learning to play a different instrument each term. The programme offers strings, guitar, drumming and keyboard. The idea is to give pupils the opportunity to try out the instruments for a term to encourage an interest in playing music.

Co-Curricular activities

SP Choir
Unlike in the JP, there are no auditions for the SP choir. All children are welcome and encouraged to join. There are two choir rehearsals during school time and one co-curricular activity. The Grades 6/7 choir rehearses on Tuesdays during the first session. Grades 4/5 rehearse in cycle 1 and 4 on Wednesdays and in cycle 2 and 3 on Mondays during the first session (13:35-14:35).

Joining the choir is an annual commitment. The Choir performs regularly at school and also represents Redhill at functions at other schools. The Choir is directed by Mrs. Elise Coutts-Trotter and accompanied by Ms Sarah Wolff.

Bands.
As part of the co-curricular programme, there are slots for Grade 6/7 and Grade 4/5 bands. Please consult the co-curricular programme for details. Pupils who are taking private lessons are welcome to join. Music is arranged to accommodate all levels of playing. The bands are directed by Mrs. Elise Coutts-Trotter.

Marimbas
Pupils from Grade 4-7 can join a Marimba Band. There are several Marimba club sessions in the co-curricular programme. Pupils are selected for the Marimba teams (Grades4/5 and 6/7) based on ability and commitment. The marimbas are directed by Mr Olaotse Mmileng.

Djembe Drumming
A djembe drumming circle is available for SP pupils. Pupils learn to play the African djembe drum and focus on rhythmic complexity and sound production on the instruments. The development of left and right co-ordination is phenomenal. Mr. Olaotse Mmileng takes djembe drumming.

The music lessons mentioned above are part of the school music programme and give all children a well-rounded exposure to music. Many pupils select to specialize and broaden their music education within the department. Instrumental lessons are on offer at an additional cost to parents. An application form for any of the activities mentioned below is attached to this letter and can be handed to class teachers or to me.

Instrumental lessons

Music staff also  run private studios at Redhill and offer a wide variety of instruments. We offer flute, C clarinet, B-flat clarinet, piano, electric guitar, singing, recorder, saxophone, acoustic guitar, drum set, trumpet, bass guitar, violin and keyboard lessons.

Lessons can be taken during school hours or in the afternoons. There is a strict policy as to which lessons pupils may miss in order to come to music lessons. These include art, drama, class music and PE and arrangements are made with the individual teachers and the parents. Timetabling the lessons is complex and pupils cannot be guaranteed a specific lesson time. Parents enter into a contract with the teachers and pay fees directly to them.

We have a number of teachers offering piano – Dr Nita Wolff, Miss Sarah Wolff, Mrs. Tatiana Bogomolova, Ms Angie Mullins and Miss Fiona Hebrard (jazz piano).

Concerts and performances

All children involved in music are encouraged to perform in front of a variety of audiences. Redhill offers many performing opportunities for the children to practice the skill of public performance in a nurturing and caring musical environment. Assemblies have music performances where parents are encouraged to watch their children. The class music teachers promote playing in front of peers in lessons.

  • There is a Music Department Concert at the end of every term.
  • The Redhill Festival in the third term is an externally adjudicated event where each child receives feedback on their performance.
  • The music teachers enter children who are ready for eisteddfods, festivals and exams, notably UNISA, Associated Board, Trinity and Rock School.
  • Events on the Redhill calendar are strongly supported with music; look out for special assemblies, Open Day, Redhill Rhythms, Redhill festival, SP Idols, Spring  Assembly, Carol Festival, Heritage Day, Ensemble Evening, Class productions and PopFest.
  • We also participate in various external events during the year.
