Cedarwood College

Cedarwood College is one of only two mainstream remedial high schools  in the Fourways/Sandton area.  At the College we recognise that there are many young people coming up from our own preparatory school, as well as from other excellent remedial primary schools, who are not yet ready for the large classes and competitive world of the mainstream state or independent high school.

We know full well that all of our students can become successful, measured against almost any standard, if they are given an integrated, individualised academic programme implemented by highly trained, supportive specialists in small classes no larger than 15 in number.  In such an environment, a skilled and empathic teacher can assist each one of the individual pupils leaving our College to achieve an academic Senior Certificate, or a skills-based non-academic qualification, that will allow them successfully to enter the adult world.

We base our studies on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) for the General Education and Training Band for Grades 7 to 9, and then the Senior Certificate curriculum in the Further Education and Training Band leading to matriculation, in Grades 10, 11 and 12.  We believe that learning should be a process that accommodates the individual academic and emotional needs of each child, so we also offer a non-academic, skills-based programme for certain learners with higher support needs in Grades 10-12.

At our Preparatory School, we cater for children with mild to moderate support needs from Grade 0 to Grade 6, and adapt the curriculum to suit our learners.  We practise inclusion and include up to three children with higher support needs in each class.  These children follow an adapted programme which accommodates their particular strengths and weaknesses.  As a large number of our children have either language or numerical disabilities, our time allocation is weighted in favour of English and Mathematics.  We follow a programme of continuous assessment as recommended by the CAPS and examinations are introduced only from Grade 6 in the Prep School.

At the College, we offer all pupils an academic curriculum up to the end of Grade 9, then our academically stronger candidates are given the opportunity to obtain a full Senior Certificate (Matric) qualification, while those with higher support needs are offered a skills-based curriculum weighted towards life skills in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
