St Peter's Girls School

The school is situated on 36 acres in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Although the Boys and Girls share the campus, they are managed as monastic schools.

History

As a retired Head of St John’s College, Stanley Dodson’s dream of founding a school in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, was realised when he met Colonel Somerset whose neighbour was selling land ideally suited to a school.

The name “St Peter’s” was chosen in consultation with the Anglican Community of the Resurrection in York, England.

The motto, Servate Fidem, (Serve the Faith), was inspired by Dodson’s admiration of the faithfulness of Gurkha soldiers. “If only a little of this can brush off onto every pupil that attends St Peter’s, then say Amen,” was his prayer.

In 1950, ten boys and two girls assembled on the lawns in front of the farmhouse. By the end of the year, numbers had swelled to forty-one. The traditional values of love, loyalty, honesty, tolerance, humility, courage, integrity and concern for others, exemplified by the Dodson family, remain central to the school ethos today.

St Peter’s Girls School was the brainchild of the Boys’ School Board of Governors and afforded parents the opportunity for monastic education on a single, secure campus. Opening in 2006 to Grade 0 and 1 pupils, the school has grown one grade per year, to capacity in 2012.

St Peter’s College, our co-educational senior school located in Sunninghill, opened its doors in 1998.

School Programme in Brief

ACADEMICS

Thinking Skills

The Thinking Skills programme is central to St Peter’s approach to academics. Girls are taught a wide range of strategies and tools that enable them to engage in Higher Order Thinking. Dr David Hyerle’s Thinking Maps and Dr Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats are applied across the curriculum at entry level. These tools enable girls to organise their thoughts and make effective decisions about how to approach their work.

St Peter's Girls School offers all the traditional subjects as well as Drama, Thinking Skills and Economics

There is an Academic Support Unit on site:

Academic Support Unit

The Academic Support Unit accommodates pupils of different learning abilities within the school. The concept, now known as “inclusivity” is currently enjoying heightened focus and popularity worldwide.

Benefits

  • Meetings between the therapy team and staff ensure that progress is constantly monitored
  • The therapy team acts as a resource for all staff
  • Girls need not feel “different” since the system is so much a part of the school day

SPIRITUALITY

St Peter's is an Anglican school, with the Bishop of Johannesburg as its Visitor.

Attendance at assembly is compulsory for staff and pupils. At the start and end of each term, a Eucharist is celebrated for all pupils from Grade 4 to 7. In all school services, Grade 7 pupils are selected for serving duties.

On their own initiative, pupils from Grade 3 upwards may be admitted to Holy Communion.

While Christian values are woven into all aspects of daily life at the school, an understanding of other religions is fostered. Pupils of all religions are accepted into the school, with specific religious days and festivals of other cultures recognised in assembly and class lessons.
